WHAT EXACTLY IS AUTO INSURANCE?
Auto insurance protects you against financial loss if you have an accident. It is a contract between you and the insurance company. You agree to pay the premium and the insurance company agrees to pay your losses as defined in your policy.
Auto insurance provides property, liability and medical coverage:
- Property coverage pays for damage to or theft of your car.
- Liability coverage pays for your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage.
- Medical coverage pays for the cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses.
Most auto policies are for six months to a year. Your insurance company should notify you by mail when it's time to renew the policy and to pay your premium.
THE VIRGINIA LIMITS:
Virginia requires the following minimum coverage:
- Bodily injury (BI): $25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident
- Property Damage (PD): $20,000 per accident
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist BI (UM/UIMBI): $25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist PD (UM/UIMPD): $20,000 per accident
THE VIRGINIA BASICS:
Bodily Injury (BI): BI pays the OTHER driver’s medical bills up to the limits, for when YOU cause the accident. The limit can go up to $1M per accident in Virginia, depending on the insurer.
Property Damage (PD): This will cover any property damage caused in an at-fault accident. Just like BI limits, PD limits vary depending on the insurer.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury (UM/UIMBI): These limits pay for YOUR medical payments if you’re a victim of an uninsured motorist. This is when your insurance company will act in place of the other driver, if they are not insured.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Property Damage (UM/UIMPD): This is for YOUR property damage costs, when an uninsured causes an accident.
